The right window coverings can add a designer look to a room, and if done correctly can also instantly improve the look and feel of your home. Blinds are an excellent way to add both style and function to your windows, but with so many options available, how do you choose the right fabric?

  • Climate – Considering the climate of where you live is probably the most important thing to think about when it comes to choosing a fabric. If you live in a warmer climate, you’ll want to choose something that will keep your home cool, saving you on energy costs while also providing comfort and style. In a cooler climate, you will want to keep rooms warmer with minimal impact on your energy bills.
  • Exposure – This is an important one, particularly living in Australia. The level of exposure to the sun and other extreme temperatures has a major influence on your choice of window dressings. Consider the direction of the sunrise and where the sun sets in relation to your home; you probably want a material or fabric that completely blocks out the bright morning sun in your bedroom faces that direction for example. A high-quality fabric will make all the difference with temperature control and exposure to light to your home.
  • Function – Darker fabrics are an excellent choice for reducing glare but absorb more heat, while lighter fabrics reflect more light, which is why they absorb less heat. It really comes down to what the room is used for.
  • Your Style – And finally, the look. Your choice of fabric should be your own personal style. After all, it is your home and you’re the one who ultimately has to live in it. It can be a bit overwhelming with so many different styles, colours, and fabrics to choose from; so take a look around your home, work out what your style is and use what’s round you to inspire your choice.
